It’s that time of year when every author pitches their writing course and, gentle reader, this writer is no different.
HOWEVER, the course topic? Well that’s where things diverge somewhat.
JUMP! is a course aimed at first-time storytellers and novelists who want to write a book, but need to discover their writing genre and learn the basics of building their idea out into a story – from developing characters and the world around them, to creating a narrative arc and how to plot this out. It’s for newbie authors who want some shorthand storytelling skills, pointers on what it means to find a writing voice, and how to get from ‘Once upon a time…’ to ‘The End’.
JUMP! is not a course in memoir writing or poetry or journalling; it’s not a deep dive to connect with your feelings or finding prettier ways of saying what you feel.
It’s a course specifically for those who want to start a piece of fiction – and finish it.
Honestly, it’s the kind of course I wish I’d been on as a young wanna-be writer with wild ideas – all dangerously untethered to reality – about what it means to write a book.
For the last two years I’ve hosted JUMP! as a three-hour course in storytelling at Norval Foundation during their Art Book Fair. I’ve had great feedback and have absolutely loved presenting the information and working with new authors to get a better handle on what it means to get their idea into a book-like shape.
And so I’d like to extend it (along the lines of last year’s Once Upon A Time course, but punchier) and offer it online, three weeks over March.
Here’s the skinny
